PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION (ABOUT 1.0)
When I first saw the System 7 Finder's "About This Macintosh" display, I
thought it looked really cool. Then I tried to make it DO something, like
switch me to an application when I clicked its icon. I was somewhat
disappointed when nothing happened. I was even more disappointed to find I
couldn't make the display appear automatically when I started up the Mac! So,
out of frustration, I decided to write my own version.

The result is About, a process monitor. Its appearance is an unabashed knockoff
of the Finder's display; but unlike that display, you can actually use About to
interact with your processes and get information on them. A little arrow
appears next to the current process. Clicking an icon switches you to its
process, and option-clicking an icon hides or shows that process, just like the
Hide and Show commands in the application menu. You can customize the display
in many ways--use large icons if you prefer, or arrange the processes by their
location in memory to reveal the "holes" in your address space.

Other commands allow you to monitor background-only processes, view CPU load,
create an "icon palette" of your favorite applications, find a running
application's location on disk, and force other processes to quit. About can
also maintain a log of application activity.

And as an extra added bonus for the Internet community, About warns you if you
have more than 8 MB of physical RAM installed, but haven't enabled 32-bit
addressing.

About is FREE.

AboutThatMac is an easy-to-use system management utility that allows system
support and helpdesk personnel to remotely monitor application memory use and
diagnose problems with application memory sizes. Similar to the Apple FinderUs
"About This Macintosh" dialog box, AboutThatMac lists all background processes
seperately, giving a more detailed view of the memory use on any Mac in your
network. It uses Apple Events for communication between client and server and

Apple's new 'Adjustable' keyboard (the goofy one that splits in the middle)
has a major problem.

Rather than adding to the standard 'kbd ' Gestalt selector like all other
keyboards do, the Adjustable keyboard pokes 0x10 into the low memory global
0x21e (which is what the Key Caps DA uses, not Gestalt BTW).

Therefore programs like VersaTerm and VersaTerm-PRO that follow the Apple
guidelines and use Gestalt to determine the keyboard type don't map the
keyboard correctly.

The following (very small INIT) replaces the 'kbd ' selector with that of
the Extended Keyboard (value = 4).  I do not check that the Adjustable
keyboard is there, I simply check to see if it is an ADB keyboard and then
replace the 'kbd ' selector to return 4.  Who knows, maybe this will be
useful for something else as well.  A small keyboard ICON appears at startup
to let you know it is there.

To Apple's credit though, the Adjustable keyboard seems to work like the
Extended keyboard for most things.

A. What is AutoBoot ?

AutoBoot is a Control Panel/System extension which will reboot
(restart) you Macintosh after a System Error or a Freeze-Up has
occurred. This comes in handy when your Macintosh must be 'on-line' at
all times, even when it is left unattended for long periods of time.

For instance, people using Timbuktu (a package which allows you to
operate a Mac remotely by modem) or ARA complained that they had
to drive down to the location of the Mac to reboot it after a
system crash. Very nice if the Mac is located at the other
side of town !

Other uses can be found for file servers, systems that carry a BBS,
systems with a FAX modem, systems which have file sharing
turned on, disabled people who can not restart their mac themselves...
AutoBoot allows maximal availability of these Macs, even in the
presence of System crashes or Freeze-Ups.

As one user wrote to me: "Permit me to thank you a thousand times for
having developed it [...] For the fact that we were running your product
last night, we were able to obtain 2 very important telefaxes that we
would not have otherwise received".

Version 1.2 is now compatible with Virtual Memory except on some older
Macs (check documentation).

AutoBoot version 1.2.2 changes:

This version corrects an interface bug which prevented the use of
some of the check boxes in the control panel.

AutoBoot version 1.2.1 changes:

This version fixes a bug on 68040 machines which caused the log-entry
and notification after an automatic reboot to be absent. The minimum
freeze-up delay has been changed from 15 to 10 minutes due to popular
demand.


I suggest you carefully read the "About AutoBoot" document before
installing AutoBoot on your system. Please read the "Version 1.2.2 changes"
document to be notified of some important changes.

AutoBoot requires at least system 6.0.4. It is 32 bit clean,
compatible with system 7 and VM compatible.

Shareware: The basic fee for the first copy of AutoBoot is $20. For
each additional macintosh you run this product on, you must pay
another $10.

You can distribute this software by giving it away to friend, upload
it to a BBS or online services like Compuserve or AOL, or send it to
any ftp site. Basically you can distribute it any way you like, as
long as you don't ask any money for it, other than a small charge
related to distribution costs (cost of a disk, postage or download
fee) and keep it together with the unmodified document in the
original compressed archive this product came in.

This extension deletes automatically, at preset intervals, the
Desktop Database which is maintained by the system (since 7.0)
for every volume larger than 2 Mb. After deletion it is then
rebuilt by the Finder. It also deletes the Desktop Database when
the extension is moved to another disk, which is useful for
harddisk-update software like LikeWise.

Unfortunally, version 1.0 was incompatible with certain Macintosh
models regarding the functions to mount all disks. This is rewritten
based on suggestions from Pete Resnick and Francois Pottier, and
should no longer cause any problem.

AutoFlush is a system extension which will help to prevent
those unwanted corrupted resource files. When your computer
system crashes, is reset by the programmer's switch, or is
turned off without shutting down, it is possible for one or
more resource files to be damaged because your drive was not
"Flushed." A hard drive's data is not written to the actual
disk until its data is flushed out of a buffer.  If your
computer is restarted or crashes after a resource file has
been modified but not written to disk, that file could become
corrupt.  Most often this occurs to the System file which is
always open and changing.

AutoFlush forces the system to flush the volume right after
one of the critical resource manager calls is executed.
Whenever the computer does the following calls, AutoFlush
will make sure that the System volume is flushed right away:

AddResource
ChangedResource
RmveResource
WriteResource
UpdateResFile

Description:

The "AV Digitizer Options" extension is a "video panel component" for use
with the Macintosh Quadra 840AV, Quadra 660AV and the Centris 660AV.   It
provides access to several capabilities of the AV video hardware that are
not easily accessed otherwise:

1.  It allows the user to switch the color space of the live video window
from 16bpp color to 8bpp grayscale.  Note than in monitors with a
resolution higher than 832 x 624, video will only be displayed in 8bpp
grayscale.  This is a hardware limitation.

2.  It allows the user to select 1 of 7 different levels of transparency
for the live video.  This means that when you superimpose a graphics window
in front of the live video window, the live video can "blend" with the
graphics at 7 different levels:  (% Graphics / % Video)   100%/0%, 75%/25%,
62%/38%, 50%/50%,  38%/62%, 25%/75%,  and 0%/100%.  Please note, that this
feature is only available when the graphics is in 256 colors or grays.

3.  It allows the user to bypass the Inverse Gamma lookup table in the
Digital Video Scaler.  When the lookup table is bypassed the video data
written to VRAM will not be modified.  Note that there is another lookup
table in the output end that only affects the displayed data (Not the
captured video data).  This lookup table has the same Gamma correction as
that of the displayed graphics.  In order to bypass that table, go to the
Options dialog of the monitors control panel, while holding the option key.
 Select the "Uncorrected Gamma" as the gamma table.

Installation:

Drag the file into the Extensions folder of your system and reboot the
machine.  You can access the features through the "Video Settings..." menu
item of any QuickTime 1.5 or higher aware application.

Extra Notes:

Presently, most video applications will stop live video playthrough when
they are switched into the background.  This is because if they don't, the
video will blast through any windows that are in the front.  However, the
AV hardware has a dual frame buffer architecture that avoids the need for
stopping the video.  Thus transparency will not work in these applications.
 The only shipping application that I know that allows video-playthrough
while in the background is Video Monitor, from Apple.

Howdy,

AV Speedup 1.0 will alleviate some excessive disk drive hits experienced by
owners of AV Macs. A good example of this is Eudora; if you have the
program, try changing something in the Special:Configuration dialog box.
For every keypress, you will hear your drive whirr as the resource fork is
flushed to disk. After installing AV Speedup, your Mac will be nice and
quite as the resource flush is delayed until a more appropriate time.

I have not noticed any problems with this extension after running it for
two days. Matt Gough and Brian Stroud agreed to distribute this extension
as long as:
        1. Only version 1.0 is made available at this time.
        2. There is a short disclaimer about them not being responsible for any
           (unlikely) problems caused by it.

So, please understand that holding Matt and Brian responsible for any
problems caused by this extension will be futile ;-)

Subject  Big Screen INIT for archives...

This is a shareware large screen utility which is especially useful in
conjunction with the Popup DA.  An 800 by 1000 pixel screen will eat
up about 100K of your memory.  Should work with any program which does
not have a hard-coded screen size, although I personally have tested it
only with Ready,Set,Go 3.0.  If $95 for Stepping Out is a bit steep
for you, use this and send in your $5.  Installs like any INIT, just
place in your System Folder -- upon startup you can choose to use or
not use a big screen (and set its size).  Written by Kurt Hebel of

Here's an updated version of Andrew Welch's Bomb Shelter Extension, v1.0.1.
 His description follows.

Bomb shelter is a little INIT (it uses up under 1/2 K of memory) that gives
you some protection from System Bombs.  System Bombs occur when a program
goes out of control due to programmer error and crashes the machine.  The
Macintosh brings up a dialog box that says "Sorry, a System Error has
occurred" with two buttons in it, Restart and Resume.

Unfortunately, the Resume button will only be enabled if the application
you are currently running specifically enables it.  Most don't.  So I
created Bomb Shelter.

Bomb Shelter makes sure that the Resume button is always enabled.  Clicking
on the Resume button will cause the current program to terminate and put
you back in the Finder.  Once there, you should save any files you may have
on a RAM Disk and then Restart.

While this may seem like no advantage over clicking on the Restart button,
it actually allows your Macintosh to do some clean up work which makes sure
your hard drive doesn't get corrupted.  Also, if the System Bomb was not a
bad one, you may be able to continue working without restarting.

here's a copy of the Brightness CDEV that seems to work on other computers
that don't 'naturally' have 'brightness' control. i.e. the IIsi, IIci, etc.
Just double click, and use the arrow keys (up, down, left, right), or the
number keys, 0-9 to set the brightness. Does not seem to set the PRAM, so
upon reboot, screen is at normal brightness. Works in 1,2,4,8 bit modes
so far as I can tell. (No reason why it shouldn't work in the higher modes
either). Don't remember where I got it from, but it was dated April something
1992.

Carpetbag is a shareware ($5) control panel extension that makes resources
such as fonts, sounds, FKEYs, and keyboard layouts available to your
programs without installing the resources in the System file.  You specify
certain folders, and Carpetbag opens all resource files therein at boot
time.  It works under System 6, but is smarter about keeping track of
folders under System 7.  It should even be able to use a folder on a remote
Appleshare volume.

This file is in StuffIt 3.0 format.  It can be decompressed with StuffIt
Expander (freeware) or anything in the StuffIt 3.0 family.

v. 1.4  New feature:  A folder can be "postponed", which means that its
location is remembered but its files are not opened at startup.

Version 2.3.0 implements Ambrosia Software's new license code registration
system, which allows registered users to personalize their copy of ColorSwitch
and remove the shareware notices.

ColorSwitch is a Control Panel that allows you to effortlessly switch between
the available color modes of any attached monitors.  Instead of the
inconvenience of using the Monitors Control Panel every time you want to switch
between color modes, you can simply hold down the ColorSwitch modifier keys and
click anywhere on the monitor you want to change.  A menu will pop up listing
the available color modes for the monitor you clicked on; just select the color
mode you want and ColorSwitch will acquiesce.

Under System 7 or later, things are even easier:  ColorSwitch installs a Monitor
icon-menu next to the Balloon Help menu, from which you can simply choose the
color mode you desire for your main monitor.

ColorSwitch comes in very handy for many day-to-day tasks.  Certain programs
require that your monitor be set to a certain color mode in order to run, and
using the Monitors control panel every time you need to switch color modes grows
tiresome quickly.  Your Macintosh will also operate more quickly if you normally
operate in black and white mode, switching to a more colorful setting only when
you need to.  ColorSwitch makes switching color modes so quick and convenient,
you will find yourself using it constantly to improve your quality of life at
the computer.

thing; what makes Default Application different is that it's a control
panel, so it's able to patch the running Finder without having to quit
and restart it, and without having to load INITs at boot time.

I am posting this on behalf of the friend of mine in England who wrote it.

This extension allows you to quickly and simply change the monitor setting
without all the bother of having to open up the monitors control panel.
Just click the mouse button anywhere while holding down a (user-specified)
combination of modifier keys, and a popup menu appears allowing you to change:

1. The bit depth of the screen (number of colours or greys), and
2. Whether the monitor is set to colour or grey-scale.

It is almost identical in operation to the similar 'RadiusWare' utility,
but of course this one does not require that your Mac has a Radius monitor
plugged into it.

This extension has been tested successfully with System 6.0.7 and System 7.

Version 1.7 now also allows changing of the control panel sound volume setting.

sending a description.   Anyway, the binhex I mailed you is of DepthMaster1.0
by the same author as SpeedyFinder7.  You tell it what depth you want for
different applications and it switches automagically as you run/switch
applications.  Andy I. mentioned it in the HelpFolder column about two MacUsers
ago and I couldn't find it on any of the ftp sites, but I found it on AOL

Note that this driver can also be used with the original MouseStick I,
as long as your MouseStick came with "Set Maker 2.1.4" or displays
"2.1.4/3.3" in the control panel it came with.  HOWEVER, if you use
this driver with that old MouseStick, all three buttons on the stick

This is "IgnoreAlphaLock" v1.1 by Willy Verschooren.

This system extension makes the action taken by the 'capslock' key
obsolete for all the alphabetic characters.  This might sound strange,
but a lot of European Powerbook users will be happy to have this
extension.
Some keyboard (e.g. AZERTY) have numbers on the top row which are only
accessible through the shift key.  With some special keyboard layouts
the numbers are directly available when the capslock is on. If you
have no numeric keypad, this is the solution to enter numbers at ease,
but entering lowercase characters is painful.
With IgnoreAlphaLock and those special keyboard layouts, you have
numbers and lowercase.  The uppercase characters are accessible with
the shift key.

If you have a (QUERTY,I) keyboard with the numbers at the right place,
you can still use the IgnoreAlphaLock system extension when you
dislike UPPERCASE lock.

When you often access the wrong key (capslock in stead of shift), you
have probably typed about 50 characters before you see that everything
except the first character should lowercase -> use IgnoreAlphaLock and
only change that first character to uppercase.

Because of the growing demand for Sam Barone's In Use control panel, I am
posting it to Sumex. This is version 2.0, the latest I am aware of. It
seems to be compatible with both Systems 6 & 7, but I have not checked
extensively.

If you are using the Norton Utilities' DiskLight, cease! desist! DiskLight
has been reported to cause serious crashes, and continued use may be

INIT-Scope 2.1 is an extension (INIT)/ Control Panel combination
that tells you everything you ever wanted to know about the
behavior of your computer during the startup process.  Also, it
lets you skip any INIT by simply holding down the Shift Key.

  INIT-Scope produces a text file called Startup Report that tells
you all about your system environment - such as the amount of
installed RAM, type of computer, type of keyboard, and the values
of important memory locations. For each INIT or Control Panel it
tells you which traps the INIT patches and where the patches are
placed. It tells you what resources were loaded in and where. it
(optionally) gives a detailed trap history of the loading
process.

    The report tells you all about the loading of Drivers,
VBL routines, Time Manager routines, Shut Down routines, and
Notification Requests (the actual text of Notification Requests
is stored in the report file). If any low memory globals are
changed by the INIT, then INIT-ScopeUs report will tell you so.

    You can (optionally) choose to monitor the value of any
particular global in greater detail. The amount of System RAM and
High Memory RAM used by each INIT is reported, too. INIT-Scope
does not patch any traps itself and stays transparent to the
loading process. You can intercept any INIT with a debugger just
as it loads and is about to execute.

While the report produced by  INIT-Scope is of greatest value to a developer or other technical  person, the report can be used by virtually anyone to determine  possible causes of problems during the loading process.

Version  2.1 fixes a bug that made the text file unreadable with
some word processors and also makes it possible to properly
intercept an INIT using MacsBug.

This file contains a Dvorak keyboard and many others from all nations. The
keyboards don't add any new character. It's just that the display is different.
The KCHR resource from the System file is modified. by adding more keyboards to
it.
For the user, the procedure is EXACTLY like INSTALLING and REMOVING FONTS or
SOUNDS. You drag the icon of the keyboard you want to the System FOLDER (not
the System itself). The keyboard is installed automatically. To remove, you
double-click on the System FILE itself and drag the keyboard out of the System
FILE.
You select the keyboard with the usual Control Panel device named Keyboard. You
can create an Alias of that item and copy it to the Apple Menu Items folder to
access it directly without going to the Control Panel every time.
If there is a problem in the installation, it's because you already have a
keyboard in your System which have the same ID number as the keyboard you want
to install. With Resedit, you simply change the ID number of one of the
keyboard, probably the one you want to install. Also you can't install anything
in the System file if  something else is opened.

I have written a tiny INIT to solve the following problem: The processor stack
size on the 68000 class machines (Plus, SE, PB100, etc) is for some reason set
too small (about 2k Hex) for major programs to run properly, resulting in errors
of the form id=28.  This is most noticible with MacTCP programs such as
"Mailstrom".  Setting the stack to the Mac II class default, 6000 Hex, fixes the
problem.  As only 4k is lost to the OS, there is not much problem with lost RAM.
The Init has been tested on several 68000 type machines, and several Mac II
class machines (where it doesn't adjust the stack) with no problems.  The INIT
is Free.

power to the computer is repeatedly switched on and off.
     NiceStopShutDown will restart the computer when 'Shutdown' is
chosen from the 'Special' menu.  HOWEVER, if the option key is down, the
computer will shut down gracefully (and the hard disk's head will be
parked--this is important).
     There are other similar extensions, but they require that you turn
the power to the computer off while the Mac is in the proccess of
rebooting, which can be dangerous to components such as hard disks.

NiceStopShutDown has been tested on the following machines running
System 7:  Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic II, IIci, LC 520, Duo 210, and
Quadra 700.

PBGadget version 0.9 fixes a bug where it reported Duo level battery
voltages on some non-Duo powerbooks.  Please replace

Features in version 0.8: an indicator bar of how much time is left
until the disk spins down.  My luck was that the disk would spin down
just before I needed to do a save, so I wanted some sort of indicator.

PBGadget is a small application to help manage battery usage on
Powerbook Duo's.  It puts up a clock and battery voltage readout in the
upper right corner of the screen.  When the power supply is unplugged,
the clock changes to a timer of how long the Duo has been running on
battery power.  A vertical bar on the left side of the time window
indicates much time there is left until the disk spins down.

There are five cmdkey commands.
p    puts up a history Plot of the battery voltage.
n    spins the disk down Now.
d    reinitializes the disk spindown timer. (double clicking does the same)
s    puts the powerbook to Sleep.
cmd-r    Resets the history plot. (The history wraps after 8.5 hours.)
cmd-w    changes the cursor to a Watch
        (this prevents the processor from napping or auto-sleeping).
cmd-c    copies the battery voltage history as text to the clipboard.
cmd-q    quits.

For Duo's, at the bottom of the plot there is extended power manager
status, battery pack voltage (old & new) , battery power draw in Watts,
battery pack temperature and duo internal temperature in degrees C,
backlight brightness, LCD contrast and processor speed information.
Hold down the mouse button to also get the battery pack serial number.

        The Powerbook Screen Tester program for the 170 and 180 was
already written, but I wanted to have the flexibility to check each
element ( red, green, blue ) for my new 180c.  So I wrote this screen
tester program which cycles between black-white-red-green-blue to test
the active matrix screen.  You can also just flip between black and
white using the appropriate keys if you have a 170 or a 180.

        Why test the screen?  Well, there is nothing more frustrating
than dishing out thousands of dollars, only to find out that there is a
burnt out pixel in the just the right place to really annoy you.  Before
you go and buy a powerbook with an active matrix screen, take this
program along with you to make sure the machine you buy has the best

Here's a really tiny DA from 1987 called RAM-Zero 2.0. An acquaintance
found it on a BBS (with no documentation - all I can find is the string
in the About box "Part of the GEMINI Collection") and found that running
it solved his crashing problems with a Quadra 800 with several 16
MB composite SIMMs. It crashes on my 20 MB/32-bit Enabled SE/30, but
if it can help anyone having trouble with a Quadra 800, I'd be happy.

Essentially, the DA warns you when you run it, then clears all memory
and reboots the machine. This solved the crashing problems until the
next cold boot for the person who sent it to me.

I sincerely hope there aren't problems with distributing this DA (and
please let me know if there are). I'll talk more about the DA and
the problems in general in an upcoming TidBITS article. (I figured
if I was going to mention the DA in the article I had to make it available
first :-))

SoundSet is a small FKEY that sets up a dialog and lets you
quickly set the sound volume, either with the mouse or with
the keyboard. Typing 0-7 will set the sound volume
accordingly; typing Return, Enter, Esc or Backspace will
leave it where it is. If the Caps Lock key is down, the
dialog doesn't pop up and the sound volume is directly set
to 0. After the sound volume has been changed, the standard
beep will be played at the new volume.

Installation Instructions


To install the System 7 Tune-Up version 1.1.1, users should follow
the instructions below to ensure that the installation is correct.

1. Reboot your Macintosh using the using the Disk Tools disk
which is part of the System 7 disk set. Select and run the Disk
First Aid program.

2. If Disk First Aid registers a problem that it cannot fix and
   you have had folders disappear, you may be able to recover
   what you think you have lost by doing the following (If you
   have not had any problems then proceed to Step 3.):
   a. Search your hard drive(s) for specific files inside
      folders that have  disappeared.  Do this by performing a
      Find from the File menu of the Finder. If this does not
      work, perform another Find and select the All At Once box
      in the dialog box under More Choices. Begin searching for
      file names beginning with specific letters of the alphabet.
      Continue until you have found all those items that
      disappeared with your folders.
   b. As items are found in this way, copy them to another
      hard drive or floppy disks for back-up.
   c. Back-up the contents of your hard drive.
   d. Re-initialize your hard drive.
   e. Re-install System 7.0 or System 7.0.1.
   f. Install System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 by double clicking on the
      Installer icon on the Tune-Up disk. Choose Restart
      after the installation is complete.
   g. Reinstall all other applications, inits, desk accessories,
      etc. that were resident on your hard drive.

3. If Disk First Aid does not register a problem OR registers and
   fixes the problems that it finds, install the System 7 Tune-Up
   1.1.1 by double clicking on the Installer icon on the Tune-Up
   disk. Choose Restart after the installation is complete.

Ok, for all loyal Kiwi's out there (or Brit's like me who happen to
live in this great country) here is a System 7.1 script for New
Zealand. No longer need you be lumbered with the date/time etc.  in
Ozzie format (tends towards the US way) but you can select "Kiwi" for
the international control panels and get them in Kiwi format (tends
more to the UK way). You even get a nice keyboard icon (my attempt at
a Kiwi in 16x16 pixels...).

This script has only been tested on System 7.1 on a Mac IIsi. To use
just drag into your System folder. As this modifies your System take a
backup, no warranty at all is given that it will or won't do anything.

TimeVideo is a Macintosh test program that checks out the timing of all video
devices in anticipation of their use in critical real-time applications, e.g.
movies or lookup table animation. For each video card, TimeVideo measures the
video frame rate, frequency of VBL interrupts (supposed to be one per frame),
how long it takes to load the clut, and how much of the screen you can fill
with a real-time (one-image-per-frame) movie. And it does a write-then-read
test of the video card's clut. These tests are performed for every pixel depth,
in both gray and color modes, for every video card. Just double-click the
application and watch it do its stuff. TimeVideo, and complete source in THINK
C, is included in VideoToolbox.sea (look in Info-Mac/source/c or MacPsych).

Here's the latest version of ToggleSndVol FKEY (4.0.2).

The purpose of the FKEY is to quickly and elegantly change the speaker volume.
We all know what a pain in the butt it is to go to the control panel and
change it from there, so I wrote this utility to change it in the blink of an
eye.  After activating the FKEY (usually by command-shift-7), a little window
pops up with a row of buttons numbered 0 to 7.  Click or type the number to
set the volume.  That's it!

Included is an installer (no need for ResEdit) and Think C source

Trapper is a Control Panel/Extension combination that keeps
track of ALL system routines (or "traps") by filtering the
standard 680x0 trap dispatcher with a very compact counter
routine. The Mac's speed won't be visibly affected (it'll be
losing about 1 or 2 percent) and you'll be able to see ALL
the system routines (even the undocumented ones) along with
the number of times they have been called. Since this is a
fairly large amount of data, it is stored into a text file
for easy consultation and retrieval.

  Verausser is a control panel which does not have the resources
to do anything on it's own, rather it adds functionality to the
"Options..." dialog of the Monitors control panel by allowing you
to disable the Built-in display. At this time it works ONLY with
the PowerBook.
  Disabling the LCD screen will allow you to use your PowerBook as
if it is a desktop computer without windows getting "lost" on the
LCD screen. Attach a low power ADB keyboard and a low power mouse
and you can push the CPU to the corner of your desk (or under the
monitor stand of your computer station).

This file fits best in "Control Panels" and/or "PowerBook" directories.
It may be included in all distributions of share/freeware.

Volume menu is a utility that puts a volume control at your
fingertips.  Rather than having to get out the sound control
panel, you simply hold down some modifier keys (user-defined)
and click in the menu bar.  Volume menu is so convenient
that I use it all the time.

It has been used by me (author) for about the last nine months
on various machines including a Quadra700 and has never caused
any problems.

v1.0 is shareware.

Volume menu is almost identical in interface to MacBrightness
(another of our products) - a utility for adjusting screen
brightness on Classics and Classic II's.  MacBrightness is
PostcardWare.

Both VolumeMenu and MacBrightness require system 6.04 or later
to run.

Here is the official Microsoft INIT that fixes a bug in printing Word 4
docs to QuickDraw printers.

Symptoms of the problem are that words get overprinted, mostly along the
left side of the page. This is said to mainly happen under System 6, but I
can vouch for the fact that it can also happen under 7.0.1.

This is it Yo-Yo the original. A System 7 power user utility.
Have you ever had the urge to turn on your Macintosh and begin
working where you last left off, with the same applications and
documents open and running? This is the first step to such a utility.
I hope you enjoy watching the product mature.

This version only handles applications. When you Restart or Shutdown
from the Finder, the same applications will be running when you
start up again. Future versions are planned to handle open documents,
so when you start up you truely are where you left off in your
open documents.
As applications are started, an alias for that application will be
created in the Startup Items Folder.
When an application quits, the alias previously placed in the
Startup Items folder will be removed.
Upon a Restart or Shutdown from the Finder, applications which
quit will not remove the alias. This is how Yo-Yo 'remembers' what
applications to start.

Do not include this on the CD-ROM.
